Tour du Catogne
Verbier – Les Vallettes – Champex – Orsières – La Fouly – Sembrancher – Le Châble – Verbier
leaving from Verbier
This loop circuit leaves from Martigny, for 1,720m D+, over about 53km. After a gentle start through Martigny, a gentle rise will take you to the foot of the climb to the Champex-Lac station, the mythical section of the “Valettes”. In 2015 this portion was the showpiece for the arrival of the key stage of the Tour de Romandie. The 14km climb to 900m D+ passes near the Durnand Gorge. These breathtaking gorges really earn their place among the 10 most beautiful in Europe. The arrival in Champex-Lac is the opportunity for a welcome pause in one of the station’s establishments.
The route then plunges towards Orsières, offering in passing a magnificent panorama of the Val Ferret which spreads before you. The route then follows a stretch of the main road, to reach Sembrancher. The second climb of the circuit awaits you, and after several hairpin bends you reach Col des Planches, before heading down towards the Rhone Valley. The final descent towards Martigny is quite technical, but you really should take a look at the magnificent view of the Rhone Valley and the Dents du Midi opposite you.
